About Linux Laptops

Welcome to Linux Laptops Ltd.

Here you cannot find quality portable computers
with superior Linux software
installed and ready to use.

Linux Laptops was a company devoted to making Linux more easily available to people who need a portable computer.

We are sorry, Linux Laptops is not accepting orders at this time. Maybe you would like to visit Whoever you buy from, be sure to ask to have Debian GNU/Linux installed.

Take a moment to look around. If you're entirely new to Linux, you might want to start with what Linux is. Otherwise, you might wonder what Linux Laptops can do for you.

We started Linux Laptops after discovering that others selling Linux systems were mainly interested in selling servers and could not afford to concentrate on the special needs of portable-computer users.

Buying a portable computer to run Linux has been quite a different experience from buying a desktop or server computer, for several reasons:

  • The many devices built in leave no opportunity to mix and match compatible devices;
  • it is harder to find out specifically what devices are built in, to check for compatibility;
  • laptops have unusual devices, such as infrared and USB ports, PC-Card slots, and power management;
  • up-to-date laptops often have the very latest, and not yet supported, devices built in.

Furthermore, typical Linux distributions are not optimized for use on portable computers. Defaults for software packages may be based on the assumption that you have a larger screen or a permanent network connection, or that your computer will be used mainly as a server. Finally, most distribution maintainers have put their efforts into easy installation at the expense of reliability and broad package support.

Linux Laptops cuts through all of the above by doing the research and identifying the base machines that can be supported, locating the drivers and configuration parameters needed, identifying the configuration defaults appropriate for "desktop" use, and setting it all up for you. Because we do the installation, we can choose our distribution for best reliability and broadest software selection.
